About 50,000 high yield cashew seedlings have been handed over for free distribution to interested farmers in the Akatsi North District of the Volta Region under Government’s “Planting for Export and Rural Development” program.

Dr Prince Amuzu, the District Chief Executive, at a ceremony at Ave Afiadeyingba to hand over the seedlings, said cashew held equal market value as cocoa and would add more to the livelihoods of farmers in the area.
He expressed gratitude to Government for the initiative and entreated the about 300 farmers, which included some 50 women on the project to take advantage of the initiative.

Dr Amuzu said a second phase of the project would propagate 70,000 seedlings, with plans to engage farmers in oil palm plantation too, with some 30,000 oil palm seedlings.

The DCE urged more women to get involved and appealed to landowners to release land for the various projects.

Mr Anthony Ekor, the Akatsi North District Director of Agriculture said farmers would be grouped into farmer associations for easy access to support and that his Department would assist with the transplanting and maintenance of the seedlings.

National Coordinator of Open Forum for Agricultural Biotechnology, Dr Richard Ampadu-Ameyaw, has urged farmers in the Eastern region to embrace biotechnology to improve production.

He said, biotechnology was not targeted at engineering every crop in the system, but rather only those of high economic value and dispelled the assertions that crops in Ghana were going to be genetically engineered.

Dr Ampadu-Ameyaw gave the advice at a stakeholder’s engagement with the farmers on the topic “The Role of Modern Tech Improving Agricultural Productivity and Livelihood” in Kpong in the Eastern Region.

The forum was organised by the Rite Fm Agric Forum in collaboration with the Alliance for Science, Ghana.

Dr Ampadu-Ameyaw, who is also a Senior Scientist at the Council for Scientific Research and Industrial Research, stated that there had been controversies and misconceptions that Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) crops posed health risks and would displace Ghanaian farmers when introduced into the country.

Uber has announced that it has enabled mobile money payment for partner drivers.

This new feature is done in partnership with DPO Group and MTN Mobile Money. It will innovate and enhance access to a localized, simple payment method for Uber driver-partners to pay the Uber service fee.

Mini Omokri, Business Development Manager for Uber in Sub-Saharan African has said, while we are not removing the cash option for drivers, we believe this partnership will provide a more efficient payment and cash collection solution that will ensure that partners have an easier method to pay Uber their service fees.

The General Manager of Uber, West Africa, also explained that the new feature will help to address the issue of arrears owed by drivers.

He added, we are aware that the previous payment system for service fees was not as efficient as we would have liked, and this has caused some partners to go into arrears, so we hope this step will show drivers that we are committed to our partnership with them.”

Across the three major telcos registered mobile money accounts have – outstripped the Ghana’s total population; a development that portends future growth for the first time, in the mobile money space.

The latest data from the central bank’s Payment System show that the registered number of mobile money accounts increased from 21.36 million in June 2017 to 29.99 million in June 2018.This represents an increase of 40.40 percent over a one-year period.

Given Ghana’s population of 29.61 million, based on projections from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and the Population Council there are currently 374,253 more registered mobile money accounts than citizens; a huge increment in the number of subscribers since 2012.

In 2012, the number of registered mobile money users stood at a paltry 3.78 million. This shows that between 2012 and the first half of 2018 the number of registered users increased by 693.69 percent.

The data shows that the number of active users on the platform has also increased by 24.29 percent in the first half of 2018 to 11.8million from 9.5 million in the first half of 2017.

Meanwhile, the number of active users stood at a paltry 345,434 in 2012 – which was less than 10 percent of registered users at the time.

The number of mobile money subscribers and the volumes mean that there are now more mobile money subscribers than bank accounts in the country. The World Bank estimates that there are about seven million unbanked adults in Ghana.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Menzgold Ghana Company Limited, Nana Appiah Mensah, has apologised to Bank of Ghana for describing it as a ‘joke.’

His apology comes a week after describing the Central Bank as a joke when the Bank released a statement accusing his company of breaching section 6(1) of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930)

In a statement signed by Caroline Otoo, Secretary to Governor Dr. Ernest Addison, the Central Bank insisted that Menzgold is not licensed and therefore has no authority to solicit, receive money or investments from clients and pay dividends or returns to same as captured in the Act.

‘NAM’ as the Menzgold CEO is affectionately called, in a now-deleted tweet said, “TODAY’S JOKE: Bank of Ghana, so now you dey do propaganda? I beg paa “Tell Ghanaians exactly what happened with the 5 or so collapsed banks you duly LICENSED & SUPERVISED for years. Please don’t attempt to use our dear Menzgold to cover up. I beg make we think!”

His tweet was criticized by many as being unprofessional and they wondered why the CEO will resort to such comments instead of dialogue.

The young CEO seems to have realized his mistake and hence took to twitter again last Tuesday to apologize for his unguarded statement about Bank of Ghana which he owed to the “fallible nature of man”.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is to introduce the Electronic Point of Sale (EPOS) device to monitor Value Added Tax (VAT) collection on real time basis in the country.

The EPOS device is a computer-like device and it comes in several forms such as fiscal electronic tax/cash register, fiscal electronic signature, and fiscal printer, which capture sales details of businesses and issues electronic receipts to clients.

The device has been piloted at some business locations in Accra and it promises to streamline tax collection and compliance in the country, as it allows the GRA to independently monitor sales records and history of businesses as well as eliminate manual receipts issued by some businesses.

Dr Dela Heloo, Assistant Commissioner of GRA, who made presentations on how the EPOS device functioned at a media sensitization forum in Tamale, said the Minister of Finance was expected to soon announce the actual date for the introduction of the EPOS device.

The sensitization forum, attended by media practitioners in the Region, was to enhance and deepen the understanding of the EPOS device to enable them to educate the public on the system.

The EPOS device offers benefits to the GRA, which include an increase in revenue, improvement in relationship with taxpayer, reduction in the need for frequent audits amongst others.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) will announce a new inflation rate tomorrow. The new figure will reflect the current consumption trands in Ghana.

It is unclear which direction the rate will be heading but it has been predicted that whether up or down, the change will be marginal from the last rate of 10 % as of June.

Meanwhile, the GSS has completed the rebasing of the consumer price index (CPI), the average change in prices of goods and services, which is measured by inflation.

The new CPI takes its base year from 2017, up from the old one, and used 2012 as the base year, and is expected to ensure that the basket of products and services used in calculating inflation reflects current consumption trends.

New figures of the CPI are expected to be released on August 15, when considerations from stakeholder suggestions are made.
The rationale behind the rebasing is to periodically change the price items that are based on a fixed basket of goods and services to reflect the current consumption patterns.

Mr Asuo Afram, the Director of Economic Statistics, said, “We know that expenditure patterns have changed, so anytime expenditure patterns or consumer patterns change, there is need to increase the CPI to reflect the actual consumption goods and services”.

Tamale International Airport on completion,is expected to become the only Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility that will provide aircraft maintenance activities in Ghana and West Africa.

This means that the airport will be mandated to repair and maintain aircraft such as jets and helicopters, including boeing and other commercial flights.

The outgoing Minister of Aviation, Ms Cecilia Dapaah, disclosed this when she met with Parliament’s Committee on Finance to discuss the loan agreement between the Government of Ghana and KFW IPEX-Bank GMBH for an amount of US$80 million meant for the design and construction of the second phase of the Tamale International Airport.

The facility is expected to be operated by Kenpong Aircraft Maintenance Ghana Limited (KAMGL), a subsidiary of the Kenpong Group of Companies who recently secured the MRO licence and a hangar at the Tamale Airport.

This will make the KAMGL the third facility of its kind in Africa with similar MROs in Ethiopia and South Africa.

The Government of Ghana, acting through the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), intends to upgrade the Tamale Airport to be able to handle international operations.

As a strategic decision by GACL, the Tamale Airport is proposed to be an alternative to the Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

New Era Africa (NERA), A Civil Society Group has petitioned parliament to conduct a bi-partisan public enquiry into the recent banking crisis.

According to NERA, the cost of seven defunct banks in the past one year will be borne by people of Ghana, hence it will prudent for the people’s representative to probe the issues that led to the collapse of the banks.

Reports suggest that the seven collapsed banks could cost close to 10 billion cedis.

The petition signed by Bernard Owusu-Mensa the president of NERA stated that the enquiry could help avert acts that may lead to collapse of banks in the future.

It said, we are confident that when the House resumes, this will be a top priority and we expect that the committee that will be formed will do a comprehensive public enquiry covering all actors involved.

Pressure group, OccupyGhana, has called on the government to probe the collapse of seven banks and punish persons found to have breached prudential or banking regulations.

We call on the Government not only to make public the results of all investigations conducted but to ensure that the law (both civil and criminal) is made and allowed to take its course without fear or favour.

The pressure group made up of eminent Ghanaian professionals stated in a press release dated August 13, 2018,“Those in management or other positions of trust who have been implicated and who have to lose their jobs, should lose their jobs. Those whose personal properties have to be seized and sold to pay back the public debt should be taken through the due process. And those who have committed crimes against the Republic should be ruthlessly and mercilessly prosecuted.

The banking sector shook in August 2017 following news that Capital Bank and UT Bank’s liabilities overwhelmed their assets and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) assumed the responsibility of their assets and revoked their licences.

Cocoa recovered some of its previous week’s losses, as favourable climatic conditions in top grower Cote d’Ivoire appear to have faded.

With less rains recorded in recent times in Cote d’Ivoire, the availability of the soft crop on the international commodities market was suppressed.

Cocoa thus advanced by US$79.50 to close the trading week at US$2,119 per metric tonne.

However, Coffee declined, as signs of a bumper harvest in top growers Brazil and Vietnam forced market participants to roll out of the September contract into the December contract.

Brent crude also trimmed as investors worried that ongoing global trade disputes are likely to halt economic activities, thereby reducing the demand for energy commodities.

Analysts, the US dollar, which appears to be the sole gainer from the ongoing uncertainties, was likely to make the commodity relatively expensive for non-dollar holders, as a result reducing its demand.

Brent crude oil thus dropped by 35 cents to settle at US$72.86 per barrel.

Gold dipped after the week’s trading, despite a strong rebound on the last trading session of the week.

Last-minute gains of the yellow metal, on the back of investors’ risk aversion towards the unceasing attempt by the US President in imposing tariffs on advanced and emerging countries, failed to fully cancel losses.

Gold thus lost US$4.80 to trade at US$1,219.50 per ounce.

The week’s auction ended with the yield on the 91-Day T-Bill trimming by a basis point to 13.30 per cent.

The yield on the 182-Day T-Bill, on the other hand, rose by four basis points to settle at 13.86 per cent.

However, interest rates on other treasury securities remained the same.

The government accepted all the GH¢456.75 million bids tendered at the week’s auction. That fell below the intended target of GH¢528 million, with the 91-Day T-Bill dominating the government’s purchase with 83.95 per cent share.

in August 2017, a memo from a Senior Economist at the Office of the Senior Minister, Habibu Adam sheds light on critical issues in the banking sector following the collapse of UT Bank and Capital Bank.

The memo, was addressed to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and provides a sound analysis of culpability of each of the stakeholders for the challenges of the financial sector.

It also presents detailed insights into how the Government, Regulator, financial institutions and their customers were culpable in the banking sector challenges at the time, and makes recommendations for the way forward.

Many of the issues raised are applicable to recent events in the sector — events that have led to the closure of five banks by the Regulator.

Workers in the petroleum sector have welcomed the appointment of the new Energy Minister John Peter Amewu with a call on him to build stronger ties with the petroleum workers unions.

The workers cautioned the Minister against trusting the technical men working in the sector at all times alleging that they have misled former ministers.

Mr. Peter Amewu, who is a former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources took over as Energy Minister following the dismissal of Mr. Boakye Agyarko.

the petroleum workers described president decision to appoint Mr. Amewu as a great choice while commenting on the appointment of Mr. Peter Amewu.

They said, the former Lands and Natural Resources minister and Co-founder of Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP) is a team player and not a divisive person.

The workers advised, for him to succeed in this sector, we want him to bring all the sector unions under one platform where we can discuss issues with him. We will however caution him not to rely solely on technical men because they will deceive him.

They added, we’re the people who are on the grounds so he must listen to us more than the technical people and the management.

They also entreated the minister to continue the good work of his processor.

Some traders at Tiptoe Lane near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange in Accra clashed Tuesday after some six assailants alleged to be Nigerians broke into several Ghanaian-owned shops at dawn.

The irate Ghanaian traders, some of whom have had their shops broken into, expressed frustrations to TV3‘s Solace-Rose Quartey, calling on the government to immediately implement the GIPC Law 2013.

“The law must work, that’s all what we are asking for, the GIPC 2017(sic) that prohibits foreigners from working in the market must work,” a representative of the aggrieved Ghanaian traders demanded.

The said law bars foreign nationals from engaging in retail business in the country.

Section 27 (1) of the GIPC Law 2013, (Act 865) states: “A person who is not a citizen or an enterprise which is not wholly owned by a citizen shall not invest or participate in the sale of goods or provision of services in a market, petty trading or hawking or selling of goods in a stall at any place.”
