Kashmir is a disputed territory between India and Pakistan, since 1948. Kashmir was one of the many princely States in the sub-continent. When British decided to divide sub-continent (British India) into two Independent States namely Pakistan and India, the princely States were ruled and governed by individual local representatives who had their claims over the land as a result of ancestral ownership and kinship or because of some direct dealing with the British rulers in exchange of protection of the rights of British. All such States were called princely States and their annexation with either India or Pakistan was to be decided by the local leadership, while taking into consideration the demands and aspirations of the local population.
Kashmir has become a battle-ground as Indian military is trying to crush Kashmiri people’s right of self-determination
British kindled the fire of hatred and agony between India and Pakistan by illegal annexation of Kashmir to India. Illegal in the sense that the majority Muslim population resented the decision made by the then Sikh ruler.
Local Kashmiri’s resented the move which sparked riots and waves of protests in the region. Both the then leaders of Indian and Pakistan in Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Jawahar Lal Nehru accepted the United Nations security councils resolution demanding the right of plebiscite in the occupied territory of Indian-held Kashmir.
India have deployed more than 1 million troops to crush the freedom movement. India didn’t hold referendum as per the call of United Nations resolution of 1948. There are eleven UN resolutions which consider the state of Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory.
Recently elected Indian government has revoked the resolution which granted special status to the valley of Kashmir and has changed it’s status from semi-autonomous zone to a state governed zone which is now directly under the full control of New Dehli.
The hues and cries of the local Kashmiri’s may turn gold one day as they are facing serious persecution since long.
