The latest documentary released by international media highlighted how Nigerian women are used by fetish priests, smugglers, and madams. In these reports, victims are highlighted with supposed names with asterisk* on them.
Jennifer* from Vienna City, Kumasi screamed out of pain and told that how Ghanaians brutally used her. Originally she belongs to Lagos, Nigeria. She came to Ghana to earn money. A few weeks, she spent on the footpath and then forcefully put her in prostitution.
“Please, get me out of here, this life is devastating. They put me immediately on the street, forcing me to prostitute from 8 pm till morning, every day. Each night, I receive up to eight clients, and end up having $20 to $25 in my hands.”
Further, she added the remaining money directly goes back to the system. According to an independent researcher, the Bright Owusu prostitution business is supported by guesthouses and hotels. Another girl, Blessing* shared her story as:
“I am the oldest of five sisters and brothers: when our parents died, I knew I had to take care of them. They introduced me to a woman, who brought me to a fetish priest and told me I owed her 8,000 cedis [about $1,500] for my transportation: I had to prostitute to pay that sum back. Every day, Nigerian girls enter Ghana, undergo voodoo rituals and are put into prostitution, and nobody seems to care.”
