With the aim to enhance the quality of teaching, the African Union has awarded Africa’s top three teachers including a Ghanaian teacher with a cash prize of $10,000 each over their brilliant performance in classrooms.
Augusta Lartey-Young of Ghana, Erick Ademba of Kenya and Gladys K of Uganda are Africa’s top three teachers who received the Teacher Prize. The prize ceremony took place at AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. For the first time, the African Union has acknowledged the efforts of teachers. The head of AU’s education division, Beatrice Njenga made the AU aim of enhancing teaching quality known to attendees.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ademba expressed joy after receiving the prize and said that the EU’s effort will promote quality teaching in Africa. It will also stimulate other teachers to be inventive.
The main drive to establish the Continental Teacher Prize is to show respect for teachers. It also means to encourage and nominate the committed teachers in the continent. AU further said that the Prize will raise the level of teaching and motivate the best candidates to join the noble profession.
