Mineworkers Union has respected and awarded former President Jerry Rawlings for playing an important role in the formation of the mining sector. The Union also awarded the first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Mr. Ebo Tawiah (a former. member of PNDC) and Mr. Dominic Foevie(previous G. Secretary of Mineworkers Union) during its 75th Anniversary.
The current General Secretary of the Union, Mr. Prince William Ankrah expressed that President Nkrumah’s prudence made the construction of Tarkwa’s Gold Refinery possible. Without any written policy to help the use of the mineral resources, Dr. Nkrumah firmly continued to sustain the mining industry.
The General Secretary also appreciated the efforts of President Rawlings from 1981 to 2000. President Rawlings started and executed policies to bring investment into the mineral sector. Under his leadership, the mining sector got priority attentions while his specific sector policy reforms and laws heightened foreign investments.
Ex. President Rawlings also delighted for recognizing the awardees’ role in uplifting the mining sector. He further requested the public to save the environment from devastation by discouraging illegal mining.
