Ghanaian actor and politician John Dumelo has urged Africans to shift their focus from importing to growing and don’t depend on cutlass and hoe farming to compete with the western nations. Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary candidate further stressed on the need to adopt technological methods for the agricultural revolution.
He made the statement on social media after addressing the 2019 Sahara Sparks technology entrepreneurship event in Tanzania. The event serves as a platform for African businessmen to exhibit their products. This year’s event held under the theme of the ‘Africa Fourth Industrial Revolution’.
John Dumelo said Africans should not depend on cutlass and hoe lifestyle to compete with the rest of the world. We can turn our lands into food baskets by using uncultivated land and can also help to end the importation of foodstuff.
He said that our continent has largest arable land and we are still spending billions of dollars for importing food annually. Around 60% of African land is uncultivated. If we don’t do anything to utilize it then our continent’s food imports will raise to $110 billion in 2025. We should shift our focus and start growing instead of importing. ‘Let’s get to work!’ he concluded.
