The United States has blacklisted 28 Chinese companies including leading tech stars in AI and put them on Entity List citing the ethnic Uighur abuse and human rights violations in Xinjiang province. The banned organizations need approval from Washington to purchase goods from US companies in future.
Both government and technology organizations targeted in recent allegations including surveillance equipment companies. Beijing has expressed anger and refuted US claims as groundless. Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang has accused the US of a deliberate attempt to interfere in Beijing’s internal affairs. Earlier in May, President Donald Trump has added Chinese telecommunication company Huawei into entity list over security issues.
According to human rights groups, China is severely torturing Muslim Uighurs in so-called detention camps which country named vocational training centers. The US Commerce Department further revealed that 28 entities targeted on indictments of repression and mass arbitrary detention against Uighurs, Kazakhs, and other groups belong to Muslim minorities.
Dahua Technology, Hikvision and Megvii Technology, famous for facial-recognition technology, included in 8 commercial groups on the entity list. US ban has hit the Chinese major tech stars in artificial intelligence (AI). Chinese tech companies depend on US firms for processor chips which used to train AI. Hikvision is globally known as one of the leading surveillance equipment makers. US-China delegations are due to meet later this week to discuss the ways to end the souring trade war.
