More than 23 children have been reportedly died in a deadly school fire in Paynesville City, suburbs of the capital city of Monrovia, Liberia. The tragic incident occurred after a fire engulfed the building of a boarding school on Tuesday night.
The kids were sleeping in the religious school building adjacent to a mosque when fire hit in the early hours of the morning. Emergency services are doing rescue efforts and also searching for more bodies of the victims.
President George Weah expressed his deepest condolences to the affected families and urged the people to pray for the victims. He also called it a tough time for the victims’ families and people of Liberia while expressing his sorrows on Twitter.
Mr. Weah is scheduled to attend the children’s funerals. According to police spokesperson Moses Carter, apparently an electric issue triggers the fire but they are still investigating it. Mr. Carter further informed that only the imam, a teacher, and two students somehow managed to escape their lives.
A witness Pastor Emmanuel Herbert reported that he wakes up after sounds of fire and peep through the window and saw everything burned with fire. A huge crowd surrounded the school in the wake of the disaster and started crying over the tragedy.
