Sexual crimes, murders, and other offenses have been alarmingly increased over the years, South Africa crime statistics have revealed. The rate of sexual offenses including rape has jumped to 4.6% in 2019 than last year’s figures.
The national crime figures released amid concerns about an increase in violence against women especially after eminent rape cases and murders reported recently. Thousands of protesters filled the streets before this month to demonstrate against such attacks.
The commercial crime rate recorded up to 14.4% while 21,022 murders reported with an increase of 3.4% than the previous year. The rate of attempted murders also escalated to 4.1%, arson 5.5%, common robbery 2 % and common assault figures raised to 3.7%. Meanwhile, robberies and thefts figures declined over the past year.
Murders cases have seen a growth in South Africa since 2011-12 when 15,554 killings reported. Now, the statistics have increased to 21,022 murders which count up 58 murders per day. The rate of sexual offenses has also increased over the past three years.
The Police Minister, Bheki Cele said they are working on plans to set up more specialist police units including women officers to combat gender violence. The parliamentary committee on police has also expressed deep concerns over South Africa crime rate increase. South Africa has a high murder rate especially of women and girls than other countries/nations.
