Iran has confirmed that its oil tanker named as Adrian Darya-1 has sold the oil defying international sanctions. Earlier, the Iranian oil tanker detained by Gibraltar on suspicion of providing oil to a refinery in war-torn Syria which came under EU sanctions. Later, the Gibraltar government ordered its release, ignoring the US plea, after Iranian assurances that it will not deliver fuel to Syria.
Iran changed the name of the ship and it started sailing through the Mediterranean. However, the latest satellite imagery by a US Company Maxar Technologies showed the oil tanker near Syria’s coast. Now a representative from Iranian foreign ministry has confirmed that ship had successfully supplied its cargo.
Adrian Darya-1 has been the main cause of US-Iran diplomatic tussle. The United States also warned the buyer of the oil to remain ready for sanctions. The US also blacklisted the ship and ordered its warrant. The captain of the ship also received an offer of millions of dollars by the US on condition of sailing the tanker direction so the US can seize it.
An official from US Treasury said that President Trump has dismissed the chances of compromise for Iran’s oil. Meanwhile, the legal process of British flagged ship – Stena Impero- entered into the final stage.
