The highly controversial Iranian tanker Adrian Darya-1 which remained a cause of spat between US and Iran and escalated the Gulf crisis, is now sailing off the waters near the Syrian coast. Earlier, Gibraltar held the Grace 1 oil tanker on 4th July on the way to Syria where it was going to deliver oil refinery.
Gibraltar took the action with the help of British forces over accusations that the tanker was violating the EU sanctions. After a lot of conflicts Gibraltar court finally ordered to release the tanker. However, it made the decision on the condition that the ship will not move towards Syria. The name of the oil tanker also changed from Grace 1 to Adrian Darya-1.
However, the latest satellite imagery showed that it is moving just a few nautical miles offshore the war-ravaged country. The United States Company Maxar Technologies took the images of a tanker near the Syrian port of Tartus. National Security Advisor John Bolton said that anyone who thought that the ship is not moving towards Syria, is denying the fact.
He further commented that Tehran consider it more important to support ‘the murderous Assad regime’ than its own citizens. We want to have a dialogue with Iran on sanctions relief but it will only possible when Iran will stop deceiving and spreading terror. However, there are no solid reports that the ship is unloading oil in Syria.
Neither Iran nor Syria comments on the accusations yet. The UK’s Foreign Office described the latest reports really troubling. It said that if it really happens then it would be a violation of international rules and regulations.
