United States has carried out the successful testing of a medium-range cruise missile off the California coast after leaving the INF treaty which restricts such weapons tests. Russia has criticized the United States for testing nuclear-capable weapons and blamed it for mounting military tensions.
The USA left the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty at the start of August and blamed Russia for the demise of the deal. Pentagon said that Russia has violated the INF treaty but Moscow rejected the claims. Critics also expressed their fears that the demise of the INF treaty will trigger a new arms race.
According to the Pentagon, the missile was not nuclear-equipped. US defense department has informed that missile accurately hit the target and traveled 500km.
Russia has reacted on the testing and described it as a reason for regret. The US has left the INF earlier and accused Moscow of breaching the terms. Moscow denied the US accusations by saying it a plot to leave the pact. However, the US has proofs of its claims which lead to treaty demise. Russian President also left the treaty right after the United States withdrawal. The treaty collapse further increased the fears of a new arms race.
