Gibraltar has finally released seized Iranian tanker Grace 1 despite US interference and after receiving assurances from Tehran that it will not transfer its cargo to Syria. Last month, the territory of the United Kingdom detained the Grace 1, a Syria-bound oil tanker, on doubts of sanctions-busting.
According to Chief Justice of Gibraltar, no application from the United States was before the court at the moment. It is still not decided when oil tanker will again start traveling in the sea. Meanwhile, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom has urged Tehran to ensure the implementation of assurances and not send the oil tanker to Syria that came under EU sanctions.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has strongly criticized the US failed attempt to halt the release. Iran has also halted a British-flagged tanker a few weeks before and strongly denied the swap. The threats of US-Iran armed conflict also mounted regional tensions in June. However, the recent release has raised many questions which answer will reveal with the passage of time.
