The United States has officially left the INF nuclear treaty with Moscow that has heightened the worries regarding a new arms race. President of United States, Ronald Reagan and Soviet Leader of the time Mikhail Gorbachev signed the nuclear treaty in 1987.

The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty prohibited the use of missiles within a range from 310-3 to 400 miles. However, Washington and NATO blamed Moscow for violating the treaty by setting up a new king of 9M729 cruise missiles dubbed as Nato as SSC-8. However, Moscow said that it is not violating the pact despite US claims of having evidence of the violation.
US President gave Russia 2 August ultimatum in February to sort out the solution but no effort made from Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin also canceled the treaty after US withdrawal.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Russia for the demise of the pact. He further said that Moscow has violated the ‘obligations under the treaty’. Russia has also confirmed that the INF treaty has finally collapsed.
