The Steel Manufacturers Association of Ghana (SMAG) has recently highlighted the fact that the steel industry is getting a big blow over an unbearably high power cost.
The Executive Secretary and Consultant of the association, Dr. George Dawson-Ahmoah along with other members of the association also visited parliament to address the issue on a higher level. While speaking exclusively to the press, Dr. George said the SMAG met with the members of the parliament and presented them with the presentation about the importance of the steel industry and how is it drowning day by day.
He said, “We are saddened by the fact that the number of steel manufacturing companies in Ghana were 8 but 2 of them have recently collapsed because of these unfavorable business conditions. It is worthy to note that the local steel industry employs about 3,000 direct workers and 10,000 indirect workers. The companies also contribute significantly towards government revenue in the form of taxes.”
