Chris Woakes outshined and dominated with the ball to clinch six wickets in the second innings. Irish innings looked in total disarray. England were 122 runs behind, at the end of the first half of the match. Thanks to a valuable contribution by Leech, England scored 307 in their second innings. The final target for Ireland was 182, but they choked at the very crucial phase of the match. They were undone by a better side. England won the match by 143 runs.

The match broke a few previous records. It took just 94 deliveries to run over the Irish batting. It was the joint shortest smallest test innings. The first innings total of 85 was the lowest total to record a win since 112 years of cricket history.
England won the cricket world cup just a couple of weeks before at the very same venue by beating New Zealand in the final.
