In a bid to make his hold stronger in Gulf Region, President Donald Trump has vetoed the Congress decision of preventing $8.1bn arms sale to Saudi Arabia and UAE. US President sees the resolutions as a reason which can harm US global competitiveness and affect its relationship with allies.
President reaction follows Congress resolutions to prevent the sale. Congress members voted against weapons sale amid fears that Saudi Arabia will use it to curb Yemen conflict. Most of them also accused the Saudi government of Khashoggi murder and Yemen conflict.
Mr. Trump has made use of his veto power three times since he came to power. White House also released national emergency declaration in May to halt the weapons sale but US President went against it due to Iran’s conflict.
Mr. Trump said that he uses his veto power because he sees Saudia Arabia and the UAE as a strong bulwark to curb the malign activities of Tehran. US-Iran quarrel intensified after the United States left 2015 nuclear deal and imposed sanctions on Tehran.
