Australian swimmer refuses to share podium or to shake hands with the Chinese player facing doping charges. Mark Horton of Australia refused to be captured along with China’s Sun Yang, all because of doping charges on the latter.
Silver medalist, Horton, stood behind Sun Yang, after being awarded silver medal for 400 meter free style event. Sun has been convicted in doping charges, and this incited such an unexpected scenario, right at the world championship stage, in South Korea.
Swimmer Horton stands besides Yang Sun
FINA, the official governing body of global swimming, issued a warning letter to Horton for his behavior. FINA said that to protest is the right of everyone, but not in such an explicit way, right at the center stage of an award distribution ceremony.
FINA respects freedom of speech, but not in such a manner as portrayed and exercised by Horton.
Sun Yang won the gold medal in the 400 meter free style and was on the center stage of the medal distribution ceremony, when Horton retreated and stood beside him.
Sun Yang faced a three month in 2014, for a positive dope test. He had to face a court of arbitration (CAS), in September in a separate charge. Horton registered his protest because FINA allowed him to play before the hearing.
