Foreign Secretary of United Kingdom, Jeremy Hunt, has offered Iran that the UK is ready to release seized Iranian tanker on a condition if the oil will not be sent to Syria. Earlier, Royal Marines have taken the Syria-bound oil tanker, Grace 1, into its custody near Gibraltar over suspicion of breaching international sanctions.
Tehran government strongly criticized the move by saying the seizure as piracy. In the retalitory move, Iranian forces also tried to capture a British tanker later according to UK findings. Now, Mr. Hunt relieved Iran’s foreign minister that the UK will release the seized tanker if Iran promises that the oil will not deliver to Syria. He further informed that Iranian foreign minister; Mohammad Zarif didn’t want to further heighten the escalating tension.
Syria bound tanker seized in Gibraltar by British Royal Marines on 4 July with the help of Gibraltar government. The crude oil was deviously sending to Baniyas Refinery in Syria. The refinery came under European Union sanctions against the war-torn country. Iran rejected the claims of delivering oil to Syria and also warned to retaliate. Iranian foreign ministry further demanded for the immediate release of the ship by calling the UK’s ambassador to Iran.
