The Director-General of SSNIT has cited low salaries of Ghanaians as the main reason behind low pension payment and requested for an increase in basic salary.

Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang further informed that almost 25% of employees, who funded in Social Security National Insurance Trust, earn GHS400 Ghana cedis.
Half of the contributors reveal that they receive 1,000 Ghana cedis as salary. 71% contributors from the formal sector are getting 1,800 Ghana cedis or less as salary. Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang urged on the need to add some allowance in basic salary so Ghanaian workers can get higher pension payment after retirement.
However, the National Pensions Regulatory Authority didn’t support the plan of amendment in pension laws. NPRA chairperson Hayford Atta Krufi also demanded a national conversation over amendments plan.
