Royal Marines and law enforcement agencies have detained an oil tanker, Grace 1, in Gibraltar on suspicion of breaching EU sanctions.
According to authorities, the tanker was supplying Iranian crude oil to Syria Baniyas Refinery. The chief minister of Gibraltar government reported that Baniyas Refinery is under European Union sanctions which it imposed on Syria.
Fabian Picardo praised the bravery and immediate action of the marines for detaining the ship. He also thanked law enforcement agencies, customs, and port authorities for involvement in the matter. The chief minister also requested all to ensure the safety and security of Gibraltar to meet the international rules and legal order.
A source revealed that 30 marines came from the UK to Gibraltar to detain the tanker. The Baniyas Refinery is a subordinate of General Corporation for Refining and Distribution of Petroleum Products. It also economically supports the Syrian government and came under EU sanctions in 2014.
