President Donald Trump has reacted on fresh Indian tariffs on US goods and demanded its immediate withdrawal for being unacceptable.
Earlier, the United States has declared to suspend preferential trade treatment of India. Now, Delhi government levied tariffs on 28 US goods in retaliation. US criticism on Indian tariffs came just a day before G20 summit where Mr. Trump scheduled to meet with Indian President Narendra Modi in Osaka, Japan. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also visited New Delhi to reduce the escalating trade tension between two countries.
Before departure for Japan, US president briefed media that he will meet leaders from various countries in Japan. According to United States statistics, US-India mutual trade recorded 142bn (£111bn) in 2018. However, as United States has withdrawn Indian preferential treatment so $5.6bn of Indian exports will be affected. The preferential trade treatment under Generalized System of Preferences let some of Indian products to be exported to US duty-free.
Last year, India has also increased import duties on various products after the United States raised the tariffs on aluminum and steel. US president has also warned India that the US will impose sanctions on the country if it buys Iranian oil or implemented the policies of purchasing Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missiles.
