Today, we’ll discuss the fashion trends of Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is a tropical country with a hot and humid climate. It has a population of 7 million. The country has a long history of colonialism. The main exports include Diamonds, Cocoa, Rice and the Fish where machinery and fuels are the major imports.
The people of Sierra Leone lead a simple life as most of the people lives in rural areas. ‘Yappa’ is the name of the infant cloth. The cloth is brightly colored and is placed on the baby’s back.
‘Gara’ is the name of the traditional dress worn by the people of Sierra Leone. It is hand-woven and involves the use of a local dye for designing and printing. Most of the people from rural settings will prefer wearing junk clothes or second-hand clothes.

‘Boubou’ is the ceremonial dress worn by high-class Muslims and other dignitaries. The female version of ‘Boubou’ is called wrapper, which includes a headscarf.
The use of plain white-fabric is common which is tie-dyed in indigenous styles and designs. People also wear clothes made of ‘country cloth’, woven and produced in local handlooms. Traditional festival and the ceremonial dress are called ‘ashobi’ which is a printed garment, worn by the ladies.
The country is ethnically diverse and has long and deep-rooted traditions. The people lead a simple life, out of the indigenous resources but are never shy of wearing western dresses on political and official forums.
