Liverpool’s Samuel Kalu might not be able to play the opener of 2019 AFCON as he was rushed to the hospital yesterday after he collapsed at the training session in Alexandria.
Yesterday’s training session in Alexandria didn’t go as planned for the Nigerian team when high heat of 37 degrees hit the Nigerian striker making him collapse on the field. He was then taken to a hospital for medical assistance as the team stood in worry for their man.
According to the reports, Samuel collapsed on the field while he was taking a corner kick. The team management of Super Eagles confirmed that he is safe and stable and that it was indeed the heat getting to the player, leaving him knocked out with dehydration.
There are heat breaks being put inside the 35th and 70th-minute mark of the Africa Cup of Nations which is for this very purpose of saving the players from getting unconscious. But there is still a problem as there are no restricted breaks for the training sessions which can actually pose a threat to players.
There were rumors when Kalu collapsed stating that he had suffered a heart attack but the team officials totally rubbished these claims. Media chief of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ademola Olajire, confirmed this incident saying that he has been told to drink more water.
“I have been told Samuel Kalu has been stabilized. He was taken to hospital for tests and he is certified okay. He was dehydrated, they said. Told him he needs to be taking enough fluids.”
It is still uncertain if the Nigerian player will be available to recover and make it to the venue today for his match against Burundi.
