The sad demise of South African cricket in ICC Cricket World Cup continues. South Africa lost to New Zealand at Birmingham, yesterday. New Zealand won the toss and put South Africa in to bat.
South Africa lost an early wicket in Quinton de Kock. But middle order did score some runs. None of the South African batsmen was able to reach triple figures. But good contributions from Amla, Dussen, and Miller helped South Africa reach a total of 241 for the loss of six wickets.
Lockie Ferguson was the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand. He picked three wickets. The wicket was a bit slow may be in comparison to many other cricket turfs in the UK. But still, 241 was below par. South African bowlers had to pick early wickets to build pressure on very vigilant and determined Kiwi side.
Rubada, the South African front line pace bowler, broke through right at the beginning to give South Africa hope. Munro was caught and bowled by Rubada. But Martin Guptill looked good and confident at the other end. Guptill and Kane Williamson stabilized the inning.
New Zealand lost three wickets in quick succession in the middle of their innings. South Africa came back strongly, but could not reach the winning line. Kane Williamson’s captains knock of 106 saw Kiwi’s home with four wickets and three balls to spare.
South Africa dropped a few catches. They should have asked for a review when Kane Williamson edged one to the keeper. All in all, the South Africans were a bit unlucky in this game. But their overall performance in the event is very much below par. They have disappointed their fans big time.
New Zealand is leading the points table with 9 points after 5 games. South Africa is way behind at number eight with three points to their name after playing 6 matches. South Africa is out of the competition. They won’t be able to reach the semi-final stage, even if they win the next three games.
