Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has called Ghana a suitable place to host the Secretariat of African Continental Free Trade Area and also confirms its readiness to organize AfCFTA.
He said that Ghana has played its sacrificial part earlier in the Pan-African movement. Now, Ghana is the best place to host the facility and Accra is also suitable as a site of Secretariat. Nana Akufo-Addo further said that we have had all the facilities that required for an efficient center for running the Secretariat. Ghanaian President clarified his point of view at the moment when he met with the African Union (AU) evaluation team at Jubilee House. Ambassador Rosette Nyirinkindi Katungye was the leader of the AU evaluation team.
Nana Akufo-Addo expressed that AU should recognize the efforts we made to establish OAU, the AU. He remembered the time when Accra has nominated as a natural place to host the Secretariat at OAU formation. However, former President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah showed acceptance with Ethiopian Emperor Haille Selassie’s desire to place it in Addis Ababa. We have a long history of sacrifices and the EU should satisfy by allowing us to host the Secretariat, he added.
The concept of AfCFTA outlined after the willingness of 49 of the 55 African Union nations. If the idea works, then it would be the largest planned free trade area by means of the country’s participation. Forty-four nations signed the agreement in Rwanda in 2018. The agreement demands the member countries to ease the availability of goods through the continent by reducing the tariffs on 90% of products.
According to Africa’s United Nations Economic Commission, the agreement will enhance the trade within continent to 52% till 2022. Ghana and five more countries have submitted their proposals to host the Secretariat. Ambassador Katungye also praised Ghana for offering to host the AfCFTA Secretariat.
