Firefighters are battling to tackle a blaze which has engulfed the 850-year-old Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, France.
French President Emmanuel Macron assured to rebuild Notre-Dame cathedral.
The medieval Cathedral’s spire and roof have destroyed. However, the main structure has remained safe in the fire while firefighters are still working to completely extinguish the fire.
French President Emmanuel Macron has described the incident a ‘terrible tragedy’. He further announced to launch a fundraising scheme to reconstruct the cathedral and also praised about the professionalism of firefighters. The authorities are investigating the cause of accidental destruction which is still unclear.
The officials have suspicions that the blaze hit the Cathedral building due to renovation work. The renovation work started amid the fears of instability in building structure after cracks appeared in stone.
The fire hit the medieval structure in the early hours of Monday and instantly spread across the roofs. It destroyed stained-glass windows and the wooden interior inside before reaching the spire.
Fire services immediately reached at the scene and struggled for hours to save the main bell towers from breaking up. According to Paris fire Chief Jean-Claude Gallet, the main structure remained safe from total demolition.
Deputy Paris Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire reported that teams were struggling hard to save the artwork inside the cathedral amid colossal damages. Historian Camille Pascal called the incident destruction of invaluable heritage. Camille Pascal further said that “Happy and unfortunate events for centuries have been marked by the bells of Notre Dame, we can be only horrified by what we see”.
