Here is the second part of the top ten Ghanaian festivals in Ghana.
People of the Western region in Ahantas and the Nzema celebrate this festival. Kundum festival derived from a fruit tree which ripens once a year. This tree is called Aboade.
Every year Asafotufiami festival is celebrated in the first week of August. Ada ancestors are remembered in this war.
In the Cape Coast Traditional Area (Fetu), Fetu Afahye is celebrated on the first Saturday of September by communities. A durbar of chiefs and processions of “Asafo Companies” and numerous social organizations.
The Aboakyer festival is celebrated on the first Saturday in May. It is a hunting festival celebrated by the Winneba people in the Central Region. “Aboakyire” means ‘hunting for game or animal’ in Fante dialect. Two Asafo Companies (warrior groups) in Winneba take part in a hunting expedition on the first day of the festival.
Bugum Festival has become a major event on the traditional calendar too. This festival commemorates the flight of Naiyul-Lah Mohammed from Mecca into exile in Medina in AD658. The festival is celebrated in Dagbon, Gonja, Mamprusi and Nanumba. The events begin with processions from neighboring villages.
All the villagers gather at the Chief’s palace with lighted torches at night. After special invocations by the Chief, the ceremony illuminates the streets. Festivities in terms of drumming and dancing continue until the early hours of the morning.
