Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has officially submitted his resignation, 20 years after ruling Algeria.
Hundreds of people celebrated on Bouteflika’s resignation.
The 82-year-old Mr. Bouteflika ruled the country for 20 years. He had already surrendered from his plans to contest for another term weeks after mass protests in Algeria. Algerian army also declared him unfit to rule the country due to declining health. He had a stroke in 2013 and since then he rarely participated in public events.
A statement from official media said: “The president of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, has officially notified the president of the constitutional council of his decision to end his mandate as president of the republic”. It further reported that “this would be with immediate effect”.
Tensions grow since February when his announcement for standing for the fifth term has sparked outrage in the country. It further triggered the mass protests in the country which compelled him to take his decision for re-electing back but chaos and protests continued.
He has also offered to quit before the end of this month but leaders of the protests didn’t consider it enough.
Military Chief, Lt Gen Ahmed Gaed Salah has earlier said that: “There is no more room to waste time”.
The protests have demanded for a new system of government. Abdelkader Bensalah, chairman of the upper house of Parliament will take charge as caretaker president for three months till polls.
