Ghana Health Service (GHS) has conducted a study, in which it has described the overall reduction in anaemia levels of girls in Junior in the Northern High school and Senior High Schools in Volta Regions.
According to the study, the overall anaemia levels of the students studied in girls in Junior High Schools (JHS) reduced from 24.3 to 20.0 %, and at the Senior High School (SHS) levels from 26.0 to 18.7% among those in 2017.
In Accra on Monday, Greater Accra Regional Nutrition Officer, Mrs Faustina Vimariba Tour told while presenting an indication and objectives of the Girls’ Iron-Folate Tablet Supplementation (GIFTS) Program at a stakeholder sensitization workshop.
Mrs Faustina Vimariba Tour said the Iron Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation for growing girls is to improve maternal nutrition, reduce the high rates of anaemia in women of childbearing age and in adolescents and contribute reducing maternal mortality.
GHS, Ghana Education Service (GES), UNICEF and other key partners started the GIFTS program, to focus on empowering menstruating adolescents and women with information to take control of their health and lives.
Greater Accra Regional Nutrition Officer said the program had already covered the Northern, Upper East, Brong Ahafo and Volta Regions, and was presently boosting up the GIFTS Program to the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern and Central Regions respectively.
