Brong Ahafo Region, Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions, Maize farmers have called for measures to standardize the measurement of grains/cereal throughout Ghana to stop middlemen from cheating them so that they can reap maximum benefits from their sweat.
Accrding to the maize farmers, the current situation where buyers used the size 5 maxi sack, which could contain 135 kilograms of grain, instead of the size four sack (100 kilogrammes) continued to rob them of their profits and served as a disincentive for the youth to go into the farming.
Nana Kwao Adams, the Chairman of the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions Maize Growers’ Association, made the call at a day’s BUSAC Funded sensitization meeting organized by the Centre for Posterity Interest Organization (COPIO), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), for selected members of the association at Techiman.
Technical advocacy for the use of standardized scale in grain/cereal buying was the theme of the meeting.
Chairman of the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions Maize Growers’ Association, Nana Adams said it was unfortunate that grains/cereals farmers had been left to the mercy of middlemen over the years without any serious effort to standardize the measuring of these commodities for sale.
