Huawei’s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou has filed a civil claim against the Canadian authorities over her arrest at Vancouver airport on US request.
Meng Wanzhou’s detention has intensified the relationship between China, and Canada and the US.
Canadian government arrested her in December on doubts of fraud and breaching US sanctions on Iran. However, she denied all the allegations made against her.
Ms. Meng has sued Canada‘s government, border agency and police for violating her civil rights. Moreover, her decision came after Canada legitimately launched Ms. Meng’s extradition procedure to the US. Meanwhile, China has called Huawei’s official detention and the extradition procedure a ‘political incident’.
On Friday, Ms. Meng filed her claim in British Columbia’s Supreme Court. In the lawsuit, she sued against the government for supposedly breaching her civil rights under Charter of Rights and Freedoms of the Canadian government.
Ms. Meng further claimed that CBSA officers stopped and interrogated her at the airport under false deceptions and then RCMP arrested her. She also called her detention as unlawful and arbitrary as officers failed to express the reasons behind her detention.
Meanwhile, Ms. Meng is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday to know either Canada has given out a legitimate writ over her extradition to the United States. However, a judge’s authorization needed for her committal for extradition. Afterward, the justice minister will further decide either surrender her to the US or not.
