Deadly fire in two cargo ships off Crimea compelled crew to jump overboard
According to authorities, Russian rescuers are struggling hard to reach the sailors jumped overboard. The rescue teams have evacuated around 14 people on-board.
One of the cargo vessels was a gas tanker. The fire followed an explosion, which caused the other vessel to set ablaze. Generally known as Kandy, the cargo vessels have had a crew of 17 from Turkey and India, and Maestro on board alongside with 14 sailors.
The fire erupted after one vessel was providing fuel to another while the crew was sailing in neutral waters. The fire forced the several crew members to move overboard. The Kerch Strait has remained a bone of contention between Russia and Ukraine.
Earlier in November 2018, Russian border guards held three Ukrainian naval ships at the point where the Black Sea linked with the Sea of Azov. Consequently, a Russian court has made three months extension in the imprisonment of 24 Ukrainian sailors. The court proved the guilty for illegally crossing into Russian territory.
Ukraine has strongly criticized the Russian move and rejected the claims that its ships had disobeyed the navigation laws.
