The unification ministry has revealed that a malicious code has infected a computer at a resettlement center in South Korea wherein around 1,000 North Korean defectors data has leaked out.

North Korean defectors lost their personal data in the hack
The hacker hacked a personal computer at the state-run center known as North Gyeongsang resettlement center. The ministry called it the first large-scale information hack involving the data of North Korean defectors. The hackers’ identity and motive behind conducting the cyber-attack is still not clear.
The center is shortlisted among 25 institutes which ministry has established to help around 32,000 defectors adjust to life.
Defectors family at risk
The North Korean government still has no knowledge about the identities of all defected citizens. Some of these considered as missing persons or registered as dead.
Ministry has further informed almost 997 North Korean defectors about the leak. However, it’s still not clear what impact this will have on them.
Some analysts also said that the leak could put in danger the defectors’ family members who reside in North Korea.
