The latest patent filings made by the Taiwanese manufacturer tell us that the coming Asus devices may perhaps have either a punch-hole display or a pop-up camera. Previously in this week, Asus submitted a number of design patents with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
The patents disclosed a couple of possible designs for the coming Asus smartphones, one featuring a punch-hole display and one having a pop-up camera. The patent filing further breaks down the two main designs into three different variants each. Both designs go after the hunt to carry the maximum amount of screen real-estate not having to get rid of the front camera.
The earliest smartphone to have a pop-up camera has been the Vivo Nex which has its selfie camera positioned and hidden in a motorised pop-up mechanism. After that, the Oppo Find X came out, having a slider mechanism concealing both the back and front cameras.
Punch-hole display phones are those phones that have a hole through the display area. A notch is different from this, as punch-hole display wraps around the hole. A number of manufacturers are trying to understand this design and it appears as if punch-hole displays are going to be the trend for many phones scheduled to be here in 2019. A couple of the first phones to have punch-hole displays are the Huawei Nova 4 and the Samsung Galaxy A8s.
We can expect that Asus will announce its latest smartphones at Mobile World Congress 2019, planned to be held at the end of February.
