Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, Board Chairman of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), said in an interview to media that the worker are making demands that are totally unreasonable to fulfill, as they are demanding increment in bonuses and the salary.
He told media during a press conference that Ghana is currently having a heavy debt of GHS 19 billion, but we are working without cutting workers and surviving anyway.
Hackman Owusu-Agyeman said, last year workers got two months’ interest free salary under his chairmanship at COCOBOD, he added that having paid their all allowances, 10 percent increment in their salary was also given to them.
He said, we cannot borrow money to pay salaries and debts for the last three days we did not increased the farmer prices and I did not came to harm the cocoa industry but for the interests of the farmers.
Board Chairman of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) added, the cocoa industry is facing difficulties and losses and the farmers must realize the efforts government is doing to for the farmers in the terms of their development. Yet the government is paying $400 more for one tonne of cocoa to the cocoa farmers and this rate is more than the market price of at this time.
