Melbourne police have shot a man after he stabbed three people and also set a car on fire in Australia.
Melbourne police received the reports of car fire incident near Bourke Street.
The police have taken the attacker into their custody in serious condition who later died in the hospital. Authorities are considering it a terrorist attack. The 31 years old attacker was shot after confronting police on a busy city street.
The two survivors are not in serious condition. However, the third is fatally injured. Police made their remarks that they were ‘not looking for anyone further at this early stage’.
Graham Ashton, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner told: “We don’t believe there is an ongoing threat at this stage, but certainly we are treating it as a terrorism incident”.
He further added that both local police and federal intelligence were searching for Somali origin suspect.
The Islamic State (IS) group has claimed that one of its fighters conducted the attack.
Officers initially received the reports of car fire incident near Bourke Street before evening rush hour around 16:20 local time.
Later, police found the vehicle filled with ‘barbecue-style’ gas cylinders. Luckily, the cylinder didn’t detonate. The video footages of the scene show how vehicle engulfed with flames after crashing into shop fronts.
Supt David Clayton told: “As they got out of the car, they were confronted by a male brandishing a knife and threatening them. At the same time, passers-by were calling out that members of the public had been stabbed.”
None of the three men officially named yet. But, Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman confirmed the presence of local businessman Rod Patterson those who attacked.
Mr. Hodgman wrote on Twitter: “A nicer bloke you wouldn’t meet. It’s not surprising he would step in to help others. We all wish him well.”
Victoria Police said they shifted a 26-year-old and 58-year-old to the hospital with non-life threatening wounds.
In 2017, police have taken a man in their custody alleged for attempted attack in the city over New Year’s Eve. In the same street where today’s incident occurred, last year a man killed six people and dozens injured.
He intentionally drives his car into pedestrians on Bourke Street and hit 33 people in a drug-induced psychosis condition.
