Mexico has offered temporary work permits to migrant caravan who register for asylum, as a big caravan of Central American migrants makes its way through the country toward the US. The government also has planned to issue them temporary ID cards, medical care and schooling.
The migrants, who will stay in Mexico’s southern Chiapas and Oaxaca states, can qualify for the offers given by Maxico. The US has warned the migrants that around 800 troops will be sent to border to stop the migrant caravan. US President Donald Trump tweeted earlier this week that he is going to sent out military for this National Emergency so the migrants could be stopped.
The president also threatened to cut aid to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, the country who helped the migrants. Some weeks ago, the caravan set off from Honduras. The Maxico has planned a scheme, which announced by President Enrique Peña Nieto, covers Central Americans who have officially asked for refugee status in Mexico or they have a plan to do so in the near future.
It is called Estas en Tu Casa in Spanish which means This is Your Home. President Peña Nieto said that Today, Mexico extends you its hand. But President Peña Nieto added that this plan is only for those migrant who fulfill the requirements of Mexican laws, and it is a first step towards a permanent solution for those who are granted refugee status in Mexico.
The plan is to offer them temporary ID cards and work permits, medical care, schooling for migrant children and housing in local hostels. The Mexican authorities are coming under growing pressure from the Trump administration to find a solution to this caravan. The authorities are trying to step a balance between placating the US and giving a green light to travel to potential future caravans. At the moment, the caravan is in Arriaga.
