Top Afghan security officials have been killed in Kandahar shooting after a gunman in Afghan army uniform has opened fire as officials left a meeting.
US General Scott Miller remained safe in Kandahar shooting
Provincial Police Chief Gen Abdul Raziq and the head of the NDS intelligence service died in the gunfire. However, Kandahar governor reported having survived but sustained critical injuries.
The security officials have just ended the meeting with US commander Gen. Scott Miller when the incident occurred. Though, Gen. Scott Miller remained safe but two other US citizens injured.
According to initial reports, the attacker has also died. The Taliban accepted the responsibility of carrying out the attack. Gen. Miller and Gen. Raziq were their main targets. The group considered Gen Raziq a brutal police chief.
Afghanistan is facing a growing violence ahead of Saturday’s elections. Afghan and international security officials reported that Gen Raziq died with the injury of a shot in his back as he left the meeting.
Jan Khakrezwal, head of the Kandahar provincial council elaborated that: “Provincial officials including the governor, the police chief, and other officials were accompanying the foreign guests to the plane when the gunshots happened”.
Nato spokesman Col Knut Peters confirmed that they have evacuated the injured Americans. Col Peters further told: “Initial reports indicate this was an Afghan-on-Afghan incident. We are being told the area is secure”.
The rarest event of its kind has eliminated the whole security body of a province.
Gen Abdul Raziq
Gen Raziq, 40 has emerged as most powerful and influential military figure in Afghanistan. He is one of the strongest foes of the Taliban as well as Pakistan. Moreover, he had earlier escaped from 20 attacks held to take his life.
