The Greater Accra Regional (Ridge) Hospital got the phototherapy machine which is basically a donation from the first lady of the United States of America, Melania Trump.
The machine will be helped in the treatment of neonatal jaundice in babies. Neonatal jaundice is a ordinary condition in newborn babies, which affect around fifty percent of term and 80% of preterm babies, research has shown.
Phototherapy is often used to decrease levels of unconjugated bilirubin that may result from sensitive or persistent brain damage. Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr Emmanuel Srofenyo is overjoyed by the getting the phototherapy machine.
He said even though the facility already has some of the machines, the model which is donated by the US First Lady is one of the most excellent in the world. Dr Srofenyo said that this exacting equipment is one of the best in the market and so they are very excited that it has been donated by first lady.
He further said that this one is going to add to the number of phototherapy equipment that they have which is going to go a long way in saving the lives of babies who develop that tricky situation of jaundice during the neonatal period.
Mrs Melania Trump also gifted some hampers and gifts to mothers and children at the Child Welfare Clinic of the Hospital. The US First Lady is on her first trip to Africa and she is alone this time. She will spend two days in Ghana deliberating on issues on child health with Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo and other child health agencies in the country.
