According to the head of the association of Europe’s biggest teams, a third European club competition could be introduced alongside the Champions League and Europa League from 2021.

Andrea Agnelli, the ECA chairman, who is also on Uefa’s executive committee, said the “the green light has been given. The current model needs modernising.”
The 42-year-old added: “A detailed assessment of the existing international match calendar is required prior to presenting a new model post-2024.”
At the annual general assembly of the ECA in Croatia, he said that the number of clubs involved in European football will increase from 80 to 96, in the third competition. In the group stage, 32 teams will appear while 48 will feature in the second-tier Europa League.
In 1999, the Cup Winners’ Cup – for domestic cup champions was scrapped. Uefa said it is “constantly reviewing the format of its competitions and is looking at a variety of options”.
