At least seven people injured in a stabbing assault in Paris with four of them critically injured. French police have detained knife-wielding attacker who attacked tourists and passerby just before 23:00 (21:00 GMT).
People have beaten the attacker with metal balls which they were using to play pétanque, a French bowling game. The attacker, identified as Afghan, soon halted. Two British tourists were also among the victim. Both in their fifties, seriously hurt after receiving stab wounds at chest and stomach.
According to initial reports, the attacker knifed two men and a woman near the MK2 cinema. Witness Youssef Najah observed a man running and holding a knife.
He further shared his experience, “there were around 20 people chasing him. They started throwing pétanque balls at him. Around four or five balls hit him in the head, but they weren’t able to stop him.”
Afterward, the knifeman stabbed the two British tourists in a nearby street.
“Our consular staff are assisting two British people who have been hospitalised in Paris, and are in contact with French medical staff who are treating them”, the British embassy in Paris said.
The mayor of Paris shows gratitude to the officers of the police anti-crime squad (BAC) as well as passers-by for their efforts to stop the attacker.
