After getting the vote from Pakistan’s National Assembly, former cricket star Imran Khan has elected as prime minister of Pakistan.
Imran Khan’s PTI party won the most seats in July’s elections to become PM with the help of small parties. He won more than two decades after he first entered into politics.
He will sworn-in on Saturday. Mr. Khan, 65, will get a country with an increasing economic crisis. He has also vowed to create a “new Pakistan”.
The charismatic sports star has long shed his celebrity playboy image. Now, he also styles himself as a pious, populist, anti-poverty reformer. He also captained Pakistan to a World Cup victory in 1992.
Mr. Khan ran on an anti-corruption platform, vowed to improve the lives of the country’s poor with an ‘Islamic welfare state’.
He was backed by 176 members in the Friday’s vote. His rival, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shahbaz Sharif received 96 votes.
While speaking after the results, the prime minister-elect promised to bring about the change that this nation was longing for. He also promised strict accountability who had looted this country.
“I did not climb on any dictator’s shoulders; I reached this place after struggling for 22 years”
