IMANI Africa President, Franklin Cudjoe has directed the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson nominee, Jean Mensa to pursue guidance from past EC boss, Charlotte Osei.
He further stated, “She should look to what happened to Charlotte and be guided but it”.
Mr. Cudjoe also “encouraged her [Jean Mensa] to speak to Charlotte.”
Jean Mensa is the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA). She gets the nomination as the new Chairperson after a turbulent period at the Commission.
President Akufo-Addo removed Charlotte Osei and her two deputies from office on June 28, 2018. He made the decision upon the recommendation of committee set-up by Chief Justice to investigate separate complaints made by some Ghanaian citizens.
Charlotte Osei also blamed for various procurement breaches. The deputies also found guilty of same crimes as well as financial malfeasance.
Mr. Cudjoe further added he isn’t expecting the sources of turbulence at EC to disappear with new EC Chairperson Nomination. Thus, it is important for Jean Mensa taps into the experience of Charlotte Osei, he further said.
The meeting will “let her understand that these are the pitfalls [Charlotte Osei] went into and these are the reasons why some of the decisions were taken”.
“She must try to see that the EC needs total renewal because I still believe there are hawks still there,” Mr. Cudjoe further explained.
Jean Mensa’s nomination also received criticism from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
