The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has requested the National Identification Authority (NIA) to review its decision to ignore the voter identification card as proof of nationality.
According to GFL, we should consider the fact that Voter’s ID card in 2016 general elections ultimately elected current President.
In May, NIA rolled-out registration for Ghana Card from citizens on the exclusion of Voter’s ID as acceptable national documents.
Secretary-General of GFL, Mr. Abraham Koomson directed leaders of the country to think through their actions and inactions. The leaders should also work to ensure social cohesion, national security, and economic development. According to them, the issue also belongs to the security of Ghana.
“We therefore appeal to the Executive and the Legislature to consider the implications of any action to disenfranchise any Ghanaian and act appropriately “
They asked rationale for the decision of the NIA to obliterate the Voter’s ID card in the process of validating the nationality status of Ghanaians.
The GFL also highlighted that “The National Identity Register (Amendment) Regulations, 2018 LI 2356 captures the Voter ID as a critical requirement for acquisition of National Identification card”.
The Federation also reminded the NIA that determining legitimacy of nationality was a critical human rights exercise. It should not be manipulated in any way, it further added.
