Brazilian rescue teams have retrieved seven bodies from coastal rocks and the forest at the foot of Rio de Janeiro’s Sugar Loaf Mountain in the Urca neighborhood which considered one of the safest and most exclusive in Rio.
According to police, the bodies are of criminals who took part in shootouts. These shootouts also brought panic to residents on Friday and Saturday. The Sugar Loaf cable car services had also suspended for two hours.
Due to this, more than 100 tourists trapped at the top of the mountain for two hours. Meanwhile, police exchanged fire with alleged drug traffickers on nearby mountains.
Rio residents have now accustomed to daily incidents of violence. This violence includes shootouts on its more than 800 shantytowns or favelas.
However, this is the first incident of its kind in the Urca area of Rio. It is an upmarket peninsula where two significant military academies and an army barracks are based.
Police further reported that the gangs involved in the shootouts have been fighting for weeks. They want the control of drug trafficking selling points on the neighboring Babilônia favela.
A man also arrested by police in the operation and they seized several weapons while a policeman also injured by shrapnel from a hand grenade. On the other hand, relatives of the victims have accused the police of murdering the seven young people.
For the past two or three years, violence has remained on the rise across Brazil. The country is passing through one of the most long-term economic and political crises in its history.
The state of Rio de Janeiro has mainly affected by the crisis. Earlier, President Michel Temer positioned the armed forces in Rio to control violence by criminal gangs.
