The US president stressed to readmit Russia to the group of major industrialized nations following its removal for annexing Crimea. Donald Trump and the other leaders of the G7 nations have gathered at a summit in Canada.
However, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is of the view that the EU members attending the summit all agreed that it should not happen. Meanwhile, Canada has called US trade tariffs as illegal.
Besides other attendees, European Council President Donald Tusk warned that Mr. Trump’s attitude on trade, climate change, and Iran created a real danger.
He also said: “What worries me most, however, is the fact that the rules-based international order is being challenged, quite surprisingly not by the usual suspects but by its main architect and guarantor: the US”.
The G7 summit groups included Canada, the US, France, Italy, the UK, Japan, and Germany. It is being held in the town of La Malbaie in Quebec, Canada.
In the G7 summit, leaders of the nations, meet annually which represent more than 60% of global net worth. It keeps economics on top of the agenda, though the meetings now always branch off to cover main global issues.
Mr. Trump feels regretted at the meeting that had shrunk in size. He said, “You know, whether you like it or – and it may not be politically correct – but we have a world to run and in the G7, which used to be the G8, they threw Russia out. They should let Russia come back in”.
The newly installed Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte supported the Trump as he tweeted that it was “in the interests of everyone”. However, later Germany’s Angela Merkel said that all the EU members including Mr. Conte agreed that Russia should not readmit till progress on Ukraine.
Meanwhile, a Kremlin spokesperson said they interested in other formats apart from the G7.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is in Beijing right now. There he presented with a friendship medal by Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
