At-least five people killed while five other injured in a blast at a Leicester. One of the injured is still in critical condition.
Hinckley Road has closed in both directions in Leicester
According to inhabitants of the area, they heard a big smash, like an earthquake. The blast occurred in Hinckley Road around 19:00 GMT on Sunday.
Supt Shane O’Neill briefed that death and injured toll could rise and many people still unaccounted for. He further said that rescue efforts and investigations have continued and we can’t link it to terrorism act right now.
Eyewitnesses told that currently shop developed as a Polish supermarket ‘Zabka’ while earlier it known as a Londis. The shop expressed via social media that none of the usual employees injured in the explosion. The explosion ended on the collapse of the entire building on shop below.
It further said that: “There was a boss on shift, who fortunately was slightly injured and is in the hospital.”
The group manager at Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, Matt Cane informed that they have found the bodies of the five people while searching the building. He also told that fire crews were functioning to find survivors, stuck in voids inside the damaged building.
“When you look at the pictures of the building it looks incredibly unlikely that we would find anybody but we are absolutely committed to search and rescue at this stage.”
Supt O’Neill from Leicestershire Police said they can’t tell the cause of explosion at this stage. “It is a joint investigation between the fire service and the police and the priority is to make the area safe.”
He also requested people to contact if someone is still missing in there premises. “It is still a search and rescue operation. It is important we try and find as many people as possible.”
