The Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union [GPRTU], has asked residents to support themselves for a soon to be increased transport fares in the country.
GPRTU said, it has become necessary to increase the fares because of continuing rise in the spare part prices.
Robert Saba, the Vice Chairman of GPRTU, explained to media that for some time now the union members have had to bear the extra cost, but we are unable to tolerate it anymore.
He lamented, we don’t just count the fuel prices to decide the fares but the spare parts’ prices are also involved to determine the fares. The prices of the spare parts have gone up and it demands for an increase in lorry fares in the current scenario. Every spare part that we use has gone up.
Mr. Saba stated that, the current situation requires an upward adjustment in transportation fares for the easiness of the transport owners and drivers.
He explained that we have done every possible effort to stop increasing fares, but due to the rising prices of the spare parts such as the bearings, the tyres, and the rings we buy to use in our vehicles have increased so there is not any option to increase fares rather than to stop increasing prices.
