With the purpose to discuss possible participation in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, South Korea has proposed high-level talks with North Korea on next Tuesday.
Only two North Korean athletes has qualified for 2018 winter Olympics
Earlier, North’s leader, Kim Jong-un revealed that he may send a team to Pyeongchang in South Korea for the Games in February. He also said that both sides needs to meet urgently to discuss the possibility.
In response, South Korea’s president expressed that he considers it as a groundbreaking chance to improve relations.
The nuclear programme of North Korea would be backdrop of any sporting conversations. Moon Jae-in made these remarks during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
US President Donald Trump stated that sanctions have an impact on North Korea. In response to possible North-South dialogue, he expressed, “Perhaps that is good news, perhaps not – we will see.”
South Korean Unification Minister, Cho Myoung-gyon supposed the meeting at Panmunjom. Koreas have historically held talks here in the heavily guarded demilitarised zone (DMZ) at the border.
It is still not yet finalized that who will participate in the proposed talks as North Korea hasn’t responded yet. President Moon further said he wanted his ministers to ensure the North’s delegation attended.
